Australia’s northern region across Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia accounts for ~70% of the Australian beef industry, with total gross value estimated at $5 billion annually. As the global demand for meat rises, the ‘northern herd’ beef cattle production sector is expected to reach $11.1 billion in 2016-17. With Queensland being the main producer and expert of Australia’s beef, an alliance between CSIRO, the Queensland Government, and UQ experts at QAAFI – Centre for Animal Science (CAS) was formed, the ‘Northern Beef Research Alliance’ (NBRA), to collaboratively develop suitable strategies to promote beef cattle nutrition and welfare, and secure Australia strong market position. Building on solid genomics expertise and research infrastructure available at UQ, the first alliance project will focus on developing new breeding strategies and DNA-testing techniques to increase reproductive performance in the blood lines of northern beef cattle.
